COR: Naturally sustainable furniture

ANEW were fortunate enough to visit the COR factory and fabulous showroom in Rheda-Wiedenbrück, Germany last month. I know what you're thinking; why endorse a company that is based in Germany? Well, hear me out:

The company was founded in 1954, and lay claim to the very first modular seating of its kind, so we had to go and see where the magic happens for ourselves!

As we meandered through the factory, every tool and material had its place, every station had its own expert equipped with a warm smile, demonstrating their skill. The sun shone through the skylights, and unlike many other factories I have been to, this must be the prettiest of them all! It's no surprise the average length of service of the staff is 16+ years.

This part of Germany is renowned for its furniture making mastery, and the passion really shows.

Unlike a lot of the 'fast fashion' furniture brands we see in demand due to price point, COR have a decisive approach to sustainability. Each piece of furniture is 100% made and produced in this local region, the only material to be imported is leather from southern Germany, and a small amount of fabric from Italy.

All timber used is locally sourced beech, and they use their waste wood as fuel which is topped up by the solar panels that are fitted on the factory roof.

All COR upholstered furniture has the Blue Angel seal of approval. They have Greenguard Gold certification too, which confirms that they avoid volatile organic compound emissions indoors to the maximum extent possible.

I really hope these pictures do it justice!

As if their seating wasn't comfortable enough, they add in even more cushioning!

Foam edges of each sofa are made slightly firmer along the edge to ensure the sofa maintains it's shape over time.

All covers are removable thanks to this clever rubber fixing which stretches over the frame; neat and future proof. Depending on the design, it is even possible to replace these covers yourself.

The amount of cushions to choose from is like something from a dream!

Needless to say, this room was my favourite!

Now you can see how the upholstery clicks in to place, and they keep this whole underside visible. When it looks this good, why not!

The sewing room, where often they reupholster furniture that is 10/20/30 years old.

With a nod to the Maralunga sofa, the Avalanche sofa has my heart!
